"InOctober2013,theMinistryofTransportapprovedtheBeipanjiangBridgeandgaveus8point9millionyuaninscientificresearchfunding,"saidZhouPing,DirectoroftheBeipanjiangProject.

"Ourprojectprovidedmatch-fundingofaround6point1millionyuan,bringingtheresearchfundtoaround15million.Manyinstitutes,includingJiaotongUniversity,GuizhouHighwayengineeringgroup,andtheGuizhouofficeoftransportationjoinedtogethertoconductresearchanddevelopment.Wedevelopedanewkindoftechnologycalledcantilevererectionbylongitudinallaunching,andthissignificantlyshortenedconstructiontime."

Expertssayconstructionwasaffectedbywind,requiringahighdegreeofprecision.Normally,crewstransportpre-assembledsectionsandinstallthemonthebridge.Butonthisprojectpartswereassembledon-site.Theengineeringsidealsopresentedmanychallenges.

Despitethesechallenges,thebridgeisnowpartofthehighwaynetworkinGuizhou,integratedintotheregionalgridinsouthwestChinawhichincludestheprovincesofSichuanandYunnanaswellasChongqingmunicipality.TheincreasedtrafficflowthroughthisregionthankstotheBeipanjianBridgeisexpectedtoboostlogisticsandattractnewinvestment.
